Newark RISE

Newark Rotary Club Bulletin

WELCOME VISITORS

Noah Johnson is a new colleague of President Donna’s at Lyons National Bank.

Linda Kohl is the District Governor of district 7120.

Chuck Waterman is a funeral director in Newark and is joining our club today.

WELLNESS REPORT

MaryJo Fenyn was sad to report on her brother Jack Severson who has recently entered hospice in New Jersey.

HEALTHY MOMENT

Grace Norcott continues to inspire us to keep moving.  First of all, GET UP OUT OF THAT CHAIR!  Putting away groceries can count as exercise - lift those cans to the high cupboards.  Walk and carry heavy milk jugs.  Raise your arms forming the letters Y and T to create a strong back.  You can even walk in place - get those steps!

GARY’S DAD JOKES

If you receive an e-mail about canned meat, don’t open it - IT’S SPAM!

My Granddad asked me how to print something from his computer.  I said it’s just Control-P.  He said ‘I haven’t been able to do that for years.”

Did you know on Canary Island there is not one canary?

And in the Virgin Islands the same thing - not one canary!

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Charles Waterman was sponsored by Pat Albrecht.

Chuck’s parents purchased the former Scott funeral home in Newark the year that Chuck graduated from the Simmons school of Funeral Service in Syracuse.

Chuck had worked in aviation for several years and holds the highest pilot certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Chuck and Libby purchased the funeral home when his parents retired.  Their oldest daughter, Kate, will be the third generation to come into the funeral business with them.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

BOARD - President Donna reported that special guest Doug Forgue, spoke and gave accounting tips to the committee.

The board discussed the possibilities for our Service above Self celebration.

It’s also time to start thinking about our 95th anniversary next year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/FUNDRAISING/INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

Mitch Ruffalo reported that Linda Werts gave a presentation on ‘Living Waters’.

There will be no spaghetti dinner this year.

They hope to have the pancake breakfast in March.

Foodlink will take place at the Fairville fire department on September 22 and October 20th from 12-2.  They need 8-10 workers.

Jan Hence reported that the chicken BBQ will be held on October 11th.  She is always looking for new members.

MEMBERSHIP/DEI

Melissa Correia thanked Norma for her work on corporate memberships - these are companies with 200 or more employees.

This year’s membership goal is again 15 new members.

Lucina Hallagan reported on our new committee - Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.  Lucina is dedicated to building a world where people unite. We will need to stretch our minds to include under represented people in our lives and our club.  Our Youth exchange program exemplifies this commitment.

YOUTH SERVICES

Michele McManus reminded us that it’s time again to obtain host families for next year and consider out bound students.

Interact is up in the air waiting to see how schools will re-open, combing in-school and online classes.

Alicia, Russ, Linda. Jan and Holly are on this committee.

ADMINISTRATION

Bob Bendix  - not much new at this time to report.  He thanked to club for supporting a great club picnic.

FOUNDATION

Fred Hicks reported that their committee had it’s first meeting last Thursday.  This year’s goal is the same as last year - hoping to raise $8,000 through Paul Harris Fellows and $3,000 for Polio totaling $11,000.

PUBLIC IMAGE

Josh McCrossen’s team had their first brainstorming meeting on August 20th.  Josh was not able to attend the Sept 3rd meeting, preparing for his son’s upcoming wedding.  Jan Hence is planning to join this group.

PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENT

The Care Net collection takes place through the month of September.  Formula, wipes, diapers, fat crayons and simple coloring books can be dropped off at the Lyons National Bank.

HAPPY MOMENTS

Donna Johnson is happy for Scott Healy forming an independent accounting firm with Doug Forgue and Scott’’s wife Kim.

Donna is also very please to pay a $100 fine in honor of Peter Blandino’s Premier Sponsor project adding 5 new members - reaching 96% of his goal.

Jean Bendix is happy with her pretty new blue Jeep.

Holly explained that Marc has missed the last 2 meetings but is happy doing family obligations.  Grace is now back at UVM and their oldest daughter is celebrating her 24th birthday.  Marc may not be on the board this year but is very busy working with Trudy on the newsletter and on the Webmaster.

We are all happy to have Kevin Mooney who works up a sweat each week setting up the Rotary zoom meetings.

Mark Thoms is working on his Red Badge duties.  He displayed his beautiful voice , leading the club in singing Happy Birthday to this month’s recipients.

CLUB PICNIC

Sunday was a perfect day for a picnic!  26 partygoers enjoyed games, prizes and fellowship and especially cake by Michele.  Thanks to Norma and John for their help in photo taking.  Thanks to Gary on the Clean-up committee of ONE!  On a personal note - I made a new friend!  Donna, your Mother is delightful!  I hope the prize winners will enjoy Fred’s homegrown honey.

SPEAKER - LINDA KOHL

We were honored to have our District Governor Linda Kohl with us on Thursday.

Linda praised our club and understands why she has heard that we are referred to as the PREMIER CLUB in district 7120.  She was especially impressed with our Premier Sponsor fundraising.

This year’s theme is ROTARY OPENS OPPORTUNITIES.  She presented four challenges

1.create and expand outreach

2.have one strategic meeting a year

3.select new members carefully

4.end polio now

Linda was pleased that all the clubs in our district are meeting either virtually or in person.  She encouraged us to engage old members and new - keeping everyone involved.

We need to grow and diversify.  If you can, watch the webinar on September 17th to help with our new committee on Diversity.  The environment is another area of focus this year.  Some clubs are having “Great Lakes Clean-up” on Earth day in April.

Even with the difficulties in meting virtually during the pandemic we should remember that zooming can actually reach more people.

Linda was pleased to announce that the District Conference on May 8th 2021 will be held in Corning NY.

and a little humor...
