SPEAKERS
Aug 9th - BETH AND GERRY PALMER, RICH COMINS, SHELTER BOX USA
Beth and Gerry, former Newark Rotary members, attended our meeting on August 9th, having traveled from the Lakewood Ranch Rotary club in Sarasota Florida where they now reside. After visiting the Shelter Box headquarters in the UK they both became inspired and very active in this Rotary project. Gerry has traveled and help set up the tents, holding a family of 10, in countries following the disasters of hurricanes. The boxes cost $1000 and include items such as sleeping bags and water purification pills. Rich Comins has been a member of the Webster Rotary for 41 years. He is their Shelter Box representative. He was well received at his presentation at Newark High School where our Interact club is active in promoting the Shelter box project. Our club along with Melissa Allison, Interact supervisor, and students Alex Ventura, Grace Kreuser and Amanda Williams presented Rich a check for $1000
Aug 16th - PDG Norma Madayag-Reilly on Membership
Norma is a past District Governor and an extremely active member of our Newark Club. She reminded us that August is Membership month. Our club has 107 members which is the third largest club in our district. She asked the question “Should we continue to add new members?” The answer was “ Yes, or we die”. At our age (well, my age) we need to think of refilling our spot. New members add energy, a new skill set and new ideas. In filling out an activity participation list, Linda Werts and Bob Bendix were awarded Rotary T-shirts for their high level of participation.
Aug 23rd - District Governor Mike Slovak
Mike is a member of the Bath Rotary Club. He has a long list of accomplishments including Rotarian of the year in 2006, 2012 and 2014.
Mike shared with us his 6 district goals:
Increase Member Global Perspective
Increase Member Foundation Giving
Increase Club Support
Increase Personal and Professional development and training opportunities
Improve and increase Communications
Increase Club Strategic Plan Development
His vision statement tells us to see a world where people take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our own community and in ourselves.
He praised our club as a role model for other clubs.
Aug 30th - Donna Johnson of Wayne County Action Program
Donna is the NCS Administrator of Wayne Cap. In 1993, the Corporation for National and Community Service was established to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation. BE THE INSPIRATION
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader”
Alena has been home in Latvia for a month. She is enjoying time with her family and they are happy to have their babysitter and dishwasher back. She misses America very much and feels her visit here was the “best decision” she ever made.
Elliot Dahl arrived from Sweden. He was picked up at the airport on August 14th (at 1:00 AM) by his host family the Kreusers. His counselor Fred Hicks was pleased to hear about his interests in tennis, soccer and skiing.
Eliana from Italy arrived on August 16th and is staying with the Correias. Karen Quartaro is excited to be her counselor.
Grace Kreuser arrived in Denmark after a frustrating weather delayed send off. She has already started school there and is making new friends.
