Newark RISE

Newark Rotary Club Bulletin

WELCOME VISITORS

Lynn Mooney was a guest of her husband, treasurer Kevin.  She has been approved for membership and will be joining our Rotary family soon.

Sebastian and Judy Schwartz joined us via zoom to speak to us about South Sudan school’s update.

HEALTHY MOMENT

Grace Norcott had some creative ideas for us ‘oldies’(that’s me) with CHAIR yoga.  Focus on your breathing.  Take a deep breath in and then breathe out all your cares, worries and anxieties.  A happy mental state can positively effect your physical state!

DAD JOKES

President Donna had the (honor?) of representing Gary Reilly and his BAD JOKES in his absence.

I miss the 90’s when bread was good for you, and no one knew what kale was.

How can you tell if a tree is a dogwood tree?

By it’s bark

If you replace ‘W’ with ‘T’ in what, where and when, you get the answer to each of them

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Care Net collection is continuing through the end of September.  Donna’s office is overflowing - keep it coming!

Foodlink, Wayne County food distribution is DRIVE THRU ONLY this year - every Tuesday, 12-2 in September and October.  Our club is volunteering on September 22nd and October 20th in Fairville at the fire dept.

Our annual Service Above Self Award presentation will be held on Thursday October 29th at 7 PM via Zoom.  BLACK TIE OPTIONAL!  “The better you dress the worse you can behave” President Donna claims.

HAPPY MOMENTS

Scott Healy was going to pay a fine for Dave Hannan getting a hair cut.  Via zoom, Dave turned his head to reveal a PONYTAIL! - no cut yet.

On another matter, Scott was happy to be a winner at the district golf tournament.

Friday, Scott is traveling to Boston to visit his daughter Melissa who has a new job involving building houses that WE CAN’T AFFORD!

Sue Colacino was happy to brag about her daughter “The Attorney” who recently received the ‘Leaders in Law’ award.  She works very hard with “tireless commitment”.

Jorge said he and Mike Muscolino are happy to have Youth Baseball back.

Holly was happy to announce that Carlos (of Meghan and Carlos) is joining the Army - going to Missouri for 6 months and then Fort Hood in Texas. Marc will not only be proud to be swearing him in but will be wearing his uniform that STILL FITS!

Matt Cook, Superintendent of Newark Schools, was happy to have our schools reopen.  Things are different and not perfect but it’s a start.  They are working on some on and off tech problems.  The 20-21 school year is a learning experience for all involved.

Bob Bendix was happy to share - his nephew, who is a captain in the Air Force has a new position with the Space Force!

SPEAKERS - ‘LOST BOYS OF SOUTH SUDAN’

Jean Bendix introduced our speakers, Sebastian and Judy Schwartz who joined us via zoom.  Sebastian is the Co-founder of ‘Building minds’ in South Sudan.  Judy is a teacher and the Chairperson for ‘Building Minds’.

With $1000 they are able to build and furnish 4 classrooms.  The fathers in South Sudan do not want their daughters to attend school with boys.  Consequently an all girls school was established.  Sebastian remarked that “It’s GIRLS who educate a community”.

We were touched watching a video with our own Linda Werts passing out pencils to the long line of children in Sudan.

Sebastian was also instrumental in making sure the girls had a woman principal who would protect the girls and set an example of what women can accomplish.

Judy Schwartz told of the days before the schools were built where boys sat here and there under trees in 110 degree temperatures.  They had no water, no lunches and may have walked 8 miles to get there.

Linda mentioned that more money could come from Presbyterian Women(Linda wears many hats).  Sebastian said they are in need of more women teachers.  They require a Masters degree and could teach all subjects.

Sebastian described Linda as “MY HERO”.  Ask Linda sometime about her experiences in South Sudan and TRYING to leave when a war broke out!

Jean wants to meet Sebastian’s wife - you know “behind every successful man...”

Next week our speaker will be Mary Jane Milano from Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network.
