Newark RISE

Newark Rotary Club Bulletin

WELCOME VISITORS
Dave Hannan introduced Chelsea DeBoover who is recovering from Covid. She is the Foundation Chair at Newark Wayne Hospital. Suliyman from Istanbul joined us again on Zoom. President Donna introduced our speaker, Laci Graham, who is the Director of Laurel House.

WELLNESS REPORT
Chrisie Kent recently lost her younger brother. He was only 40 years old.
Doug Forgue asked us to pray for his older brother’s family. His brother is 65 and living in Bloomfield. He is resting at home following an incident where he passed out and needed CPR.
Linda Werts reported that Jeanne Salisbury has serious back issues. She is looking for a new surgeon since her surgery was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Mike Muscolino reported that Doug Freelove had died. He was a year behind Mike in High School. Mike had fond memories of growing up in the ‘WoodStock’ era!

HEALTHY MOMENT
Grace Norcott reminded us that during the pandemic we have more time to think about what the holiday season means to us. Children often express this best. Through the Bible verse of Luke 2, Linus explains to Charlie Brown what Christmas means to him. When Christmas doesn’t fit your expectations of a perfect holiday, think about how Mary and Joseph probably didn’t think that a manger was a perfect place for their child to be born.

BAD DAD JOKES
Why do Dasher and Dancer enjoy coffee so much? Because they’re Santa’s star bucks.

A man once sent Christmas Cards using only 25 letters of the alphabet. When friends admitted they hadn’t understood the message, he pointed to the card and said LOOK! NO ‘L’.

A local Newscaster interviewed a little girl who was in a crowd of people waiting to greet Santa in the parade.
Are you going to talk with Santa he asked.
NO! The real Santa is at the mall!

FROM MARYJO FENYN
What do you call people who are afraid of Santa Claus? CLAUS-TROPHOBIC

 LIVING WATERS
Linda Werts is passionate about the Living Waters project - this year installing a water purification system in Tabi, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Newark Rotary Club has taken the lead for the project. The virtual Clean Water training will be offered in April 2021. Please consider joining the team for this humanitarian service. Be a part of a project that brings clean water and sanitation in an area of great need.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW RECOGNITION
Past District Governor, Dave Hannan presented 2 Paul Harris fellows to Linda Werts and Russ Harris. A PH pin is presented in $1000 increments. It is important to note that less than 8% goes to administrative costs.
Linda received her PH plus 5 and Russ Harris his PH plus 1. Besides giving monetarily, Linda and Russ are both extremely active in our community and world wide projects.

HAPPY MOMENTS
Steve Hallagan was happy to see the traditional blue Christmas lights a the Salisburys and Santa on Steve Mooney’s roof to signify that all is well amid the chaos of 2020. Norma was happy that she could join us via zoom and didn’t have to get out in the snow. She knows that Gary feels the same any will be HAPPY to give $5.

SPEAKER - LACI GRAHAM
Pat Albrecht introduced Laci Graham, the Director of Laurel House. LacI grew up in Newark and lives here now with her husband and 3 children. Laci has a Bachelor Degree in Business from St. John Fisher. She has her LPN from Finger Lakes BOCES and Gerontology certificate from Life Span. Pat referred to Laci as having a HOSPICE HEART. This comfort-care home is for patients in Wayne County. It is a 2 bedroom house where patients usually stay for 2-6 weeks at no fee. So far they have served 57 families.
Angels Attic is a new Charity Retail Shop on Main Street in Newark where all proceeds go to the Laurel House. Along with the physical home there are grief support groups and community support for those caring for their loved ones at home.
The Legacy Garden Project will enter phase 2 this spring - engraving bricks for a garden walkway.
Peter Blandino expressed his appreciation for the care he and his wife, Helen received when she spent her last days at Laurel House.
We are lucky to have Laci and the Laurel House in our little town of Newark.

There will be no more meetings in December. Watch your e-mails to see if we will need to meet virtually in January.

Happy Holidays!

See you in 2021!
