Bob Goodman introduced Arlene Copeland, who told us about the Tiffany Mosaic housed in the historic chapel in the Spa Apartments, formerly home to Clifton Springs Sanitarium. Louis Comfort Tiffany's first mosaic, of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, was installed there in 1901. Before installation in the chapel, it was exhibited abroad, then at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. Tiffany experimented with iridescent glass andd non-geometric shapes to make a mosaic that looks like a painting. Travel took its toll on the piece and craftsman, John Lord, has taken on its restoration. The mosaic is 18 feet long and 6 feet tall and Lord's challenge was correcting previous corrections. Previous plaster of Paris repairs had been painted over poorly, and where oil, house paint and other substances covered good, sound glass. Ethan Fogg, the hospital's director of community relations, says a local resident paid for the restoration. The mosaic is lit 24 hours a day and it's brilliant at sunup and sundown. The chapel is used for community concerts, weddings, funerals and meditation by those who live in the apartments.
