Newark RISE

Newark Rotary Club Bulletin

Donna Johnson recognized Suliyman from Istanbul who joined us again on zoom.  Kevin Mooney introduced Chris Burgess, a potential new member and the owner of ‘Whatawash’, car wash.  Julia Kellogg and Emily Pang, our NHS scholarship winners also joined us via zoom.

Carol Nary is still in Pennsylvania.  She will be wearing her sling as a result of her fall for 4-6 more weeks.  We were happy to virtually see her smiling face and hear her infectious laugh on zoom.

Grace Norcott is aware of the typical New Year’s resolutions we all make such as losing weight, eating healthier and to quit smoking.  Her suggestion is “don’t try to do too much at once”.  Make your goals attainable.  Be specific - for example if you need to walk more, start with the small goal of walking to your mail box once a day.
GOOD LUCK - Be patient with yourself!
Compliments of Jean Bendix

A wife and husband are in the kitchen and a plate of cookies is on the counter.
Wife - “Seriously? another cookie?”
Husband -” One Covid symptom is loss of the ability to taste food, so I like to screen myself every ten minutes or so.”
Compliments of MaryJo Fenyn

Why was the snowman rummaging through the bag of carrots?
He was picking his nose!
Compliments of John Zornow
Will glass coffins become popular?
Remains to be seen.
Congratulations America!
51 years ago you stepped on the moon
Today you can’t even go to Canada.

Mike Muscolino thanked Mitch Ruffalo for adding a filter to the heating system in our meeting place at the Community Center to keep us compliant with covid standards.
President Donna reminded us to write in the notebooks provided on each table with prospective members and any other suggestions (thanks to Bob Bendix for demonstrating).
Flyers on each table listed the events scheduled for January to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
President Donna was pleased to read two thank-you notes.  The Newark Food Closet was happy to receive the grocery bags filled by Rotarians to feed families in need at Christmas time.
The Dictionary project benefited all 3rd grade students in the Newark School district.

The Laurel House awning is complete and waiting for good weather to be installed. The Living Waters project needs more Rotarians to volunteer - See Linda Werts. Another blood drive is in the works.

Special thanks to people who donated 25 tickets back to be given out for the Lasagna dinner on January 17th at Nana’s.  Ann Rogers has volunteered to deliver dinners to the homebound.  Mike Muscolino has offered to get 2 students to help with car delivery if needed.

MEMBERSHIP - Melissa Corriea
Melissa was pleased to announce that we have our first  corporate membership with ARC. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday January 9th via zoom.

DEI - Lucina Hallagan
January is Diversity month.  Lucina is excited about the speakers they have set up including MLK speaker for January 14th.  ‘You are not Alone’ on January 21st and the NY state DEI rep from Brazil on January 28th.

YOUTH SERVICES - Michele McManus
They are still looking for an advisor for Interact.  Holly has written the job description.
On another topic, ‘Server Susie’, from the Quality Inn inquires - “Is Susie the Mayor still alive?”  We had a confirmed siting at Rotary today!

PUBLIC IMAGE - Gary Reilly reported on behalf of the Brochure Committee.  The new brochure has been submitted to the board and is ready to be sent to the printshop at ARC.  The committee is excited to being close to completion after an off and on 10 year effort.

Past District Governor Dave Hannan, through the MAJIC of the computer, presented me with a Paul Harris plus 1.  I was honored to be pinned by the Foundation chairman AKA my husband Fred! I have enjoyed being the Editor of the newsletter and making the project boards which began when I was an Honorary member. Having retired in May I became more active with the club by joining the Public Image committee.
Kevin Mooney was pleased to present 2 Newark High School students with Rotary Scholarships.  Julia Kellogg had a grade point average of 94.49.  She is involved in sports and volunteering.  She will be attending Broome College just north of Binghamton, NY.
Emily Pang, with a GPA of 96.38 was the Student Council President.  She will be attending Hobart William Smith, studying Medicine.  Each girl received $1,400.

Melissa Correia was happy to have both her children home for the holidays.  Her son recently received a promotion as a Coreman in the Navy.  Her daughter is attending the University of Buffalo and is the chairman of their Roteract Club.
Mike Muscolino and his wife are having fun with their new puppy “Sammy’.  He is a 10 week old Jack Russell/Hound.
Holly Kreuser is happy to announce that ‘Finn’ is One today!
Bob Bendix is happy to have their new Sun-room completed.  Now waiting for the SUN!

Next week at the beginning of Diversity month we will hear from Wayne Action speakers Jim Wood and Pastor Green.
