ELECTION NIGHT SPAGHETTI DINNER
Loretta Lynch, a former Attorney General said, ”Voting is the way we teach our children how to be citizens, and the importance of their voice”. Newark Rotary started a tradition of bringing our community together on election night by hosting a Spaghetti dinner. No politics, just a focus on Rotary doing good in the world. This year’s profit was $872 with 94 attending.

HAITI PROJECT
Dave Doebler reported that Newark Rotary has funded the playground to be on the site in the school yard at the Institution Victoria Montou School - St Marc Haiti that the Kay ESPWA Kids will attend.
CALIFORNIA FIRES - NEWARK CONNECTION
Our hearts go out to the families displaced and homeless and who have lost loved ones in the California fires. We have a first hand connection to that tragedy. Kimberly Meeks son lived in Paradise. He reported that 9000 homes are gone, 59 people are dead and 300 are still missing. His family is safe and living in an RV in the nearby town of Chico where his children attend school. Kimberely will be going to visit her son in December. Rotarians will be contributing to Visa and Mastercard gifts cards for Kimberly to deliver.

In Memory of Jack Blodgett, Newark Rotary sponsored the Blood Drive held at the Episcopal Church on Saturday, November 17th. As promised, JoAnne Speight was there to hold your hand!

Dave Doebler thanked our ringers for collecting money for the Salvation Army on the coldest year ever! 27 volunteers collected $1,012.36.

Nov 8 - Bertin Mboko - Past Rotary Peace Scholar
Past Rotary International Director, Jack Best, from Penfield Rotary Club accompanied Bertin helping us to understand the objective of a peace scholar - To make a difference in peace-keeping and peace-building worldwide or to apply his experience in human resources and studies of conflict management for corporations or not-for-profit organization. Bertin is from the Congo with a refugee background. He speaks 14 languages. Jack explained that the challenge is placing these scholars where they can do the most good. They must have at least a bachelor’s degree and write an essay about their vision and world knowledge of how to bring peace to the world. Bertin also had 3 years work experience and conflict resolution. Bertin wanted to stay in the US for his internship working with refugees.

Not to be confused with Paul Harris who founded Rotary, Arch Klumph started the Rotary Foundation in 1917. Arch was born in 1869 after the Civil War. He was self educated, leaving school at the age of 12. He was a fine musician playing the flute in the Cleveland orchestra. He owned many businesses and at age 42 he joined the Cleveland Rotary. He wrote the constitution for all Rotary clubs. $26.50 was the first collection for the Foundation. $10.00 a person was donated in his name when he died at the age of 82.

Herb founded the Rotary Club of Wynnewood Oklahoma. He moved to Chicago in the late ’20’s and joined Club #1 AKA Rotary/One. Herb gave the right to use his famous Four Way Test to Rotary International in 1942, In 1954 he served as RI president. Herb at some point became discouraged with himself in telling the truth in relation to his business dealings. Following the guidelines of his own 4-way test he changed relations with his competitors, reached ideals in his business and overcame bankrupsy, increasing good will. He retained the rights to use the test for himself, his Club Aluminum Company and the Christian Workers Foundation.
Adam Casper is being sponsored by Gary and Norma Reilly. Adam is a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones in Newark. Adam currently resides in Marion with his wife and 3 children. Adam moved his business to Newark in 2016 to work closer to the community where he grew up.
FOUNDATION
Steve Taylor talked to us about our fundraiser “Pennies for Polio” which falls under the foundation umbrella. We collected $244.05. He reminded us that half of the money raised comes back to our community. 1 dollar = 1 point for a Paul Harris recipient. Fred Hicks, foundation chair reminded us that our Foundation goal is $10,500. We are hoping for 100% participation.
The Foundation Dinner was held at the Ventosa Winery on November 30th.
YOUTH EXCHANGE UPDATES
Letter from Denmark
Grace Kreuser, with her busy schedule, still takes time to write and keep us up to date with her exciting life in Denmark. She has been attending concerts and going to museums. At the City Hall visit she enjoyed going behind the scenes and taking a peek in the Queens bathroom! She had the honor of playing cello in the orchestra. She traveled to Copenhagen and attended the Harry Potter festival. Grace won a pumpkin carving contest even though they don’t celebrate Halloween in Denmark. In her words “ I’m having the time of my life!”.
Lindsay in Italy
Lindsay writes that her exchange experience is more than she expected and describes it as an “emotional rollercoaster. She referred to her day in Venice as unforgettable, hiking and visiting an old church. She is learning to roll her R’s for Italian. Also reports that “homesickness is real”!

Marge Gile is feeling better and enjoyed the card and flowers we sent. Holly’s father Ted O’Toole, had ear surgery and Holly is disappointed they didn’t make them pointy as she had requested. Hannelora is back after 4 months recovering from surgery at home. She loved the cards from everyone who “missed her smile”. Gail Chambers is recovering from back surgery. Jean Williams grandson is facing another surgery for another tumor found in his back. MaryJo Fenyn is relieved to have a benign lump in her breast - husband Ed has been diagnosed with Melanoma.
