Last Week's Meeting

6TH VIRTUAL MEETING

Donna Johnson zoomed us in last Thursday with a quote from Shakespeare and an invocation.

President Holly in appropriate garb spoketh like Shakespeare and announced that it was also National Picnic and Cherry Cheesecake day. In honor of Shakespeare,  Holly shared a rendition of the Hokey-Pokey, Shakespeare style(you had to be there). She was sad to announce that our Rotary youth exchange program has been cancelled for next year.  The pancake breakfast has been rescheduled for November and the Chicken BBQ is still scheduled for Father’s day in June.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Josh McCrossen was sponsored by Frank All, Fred Hicks and Tim Johnson.  Josh has recently retired as Wayne County Commissioner of Social Services - a position he held for 20 years.  He was honored to be our first Virtual Inductee.

Club Announcements/Happy Moments

Bill Doebler - honored to be involved with the Free Lunch Program that fed over 400 people last week.  To help out you can make checks payable to Newark Rotary and Holly will make sure it gets to the right place.

Doug Forgue and Jan Hence announced that the Hill Cumorah pageant is still waiting to make a decision  - we should know if the pageant will go on as planned by the end of May.

John Zornow reported that the Laurel House 5K race has been cancelled.  They will have a race called “Virtually together” around July 4th.  The BBQ last Sunday was a success - sold out!

Steve Taylor lost his Father’s pen - please let him know if you find it.

Wellness Report

Good News - no illnesses to report!  Gary and Norma had recently visited with Roger VandeMortel and found him to be doing well.

Speaker - Youth Exchange Student Ramon

This year we have enjoyed our foreign exchange student from Switzerland.  Ramon shared a video and explained his life growing up in a small city in the Swiss Alps. Switzerland is 3 times smaller than NY State, known for it vineyards and tourist attractions.  Driving in Switzerland begins when you are 18.  Ramon enjoyed traveling everywhere by train.  Schools are very different - attending 14 years before being eligible for college.  Ramon excels in Skiing and Soccer - his Dad is from Portugal where Soccer is almost a RELIGION!  Ramon’s Grandfather introduced him to Rotary. His Mother and Brother (4 years older) were exchange students.  Ramon is  coping with the quarantine - not what he had planned for his visit.

On April 29th, President Holly presented a $1,537 check to the Newark Free Lunch Program, thanks to generous donations of Newark Rotarians. Last week Holly announced that the program was in dire need of funds, due to a triple in the amount of lunches served, and you stepped up! Thank you Newark Rotarians! You can still make donations on our website or by mailing a check to P.O. Box 374.
