Passing the baton

Thursday was Holly’s last meeting as she passed the leadership role of President to Donna Johnson.  This was also our last meeting with Dave Hannan as District Governor.

With the flag, strategically placed in the background, Jean Bendix gave the invocation and led the pledge.

president's announcements

Ironically, during this pandemic, last Thursday was National Shake hands Day.  We may have to change that to National Elbow-bump Day!  Strawberry Parfait Day was more doable but Holly was unable to zoom those so we’re on our own.

Holly was pleased to announce that we collected 32 units of blood at the Bob Goodman blood drive last Wednesday.

Wellness Report

MaryJo Fenyn was hoping to visit her husband Ed IN PERSON at Rochester General.  He was scheduled on Thursday to  have an MRI.

Michele McManus reported that Sharon SanAngelo was doing better following her back surgery.  On a sad note, Her daughter’s husband’s uncle died at the young age of 57.  Karen Dean’s son, Chase, is home briefly before returning to the hospital in a month.

club announcements

Jan Hence reported on another successful chicken BBQ held on Father’s Day, selling 525 meals.  She thanked the workers and had a special thank-you to Marc who shared the BBQ information on line.

Gary Reilly reminded us of the Golf tournament on August 14th to support Canp Onseyawa.  You can register on line.  There are 3 ways to contribute and make a difference in the lives of the campers - Play golf, buy raffle tickets or make a donation.

Donna Johnson was acknowledged for her great year as Membership chairperson.  Newark has 112 active members and is the 2nd largest club in our district.

board changes

Kevin Mooney will replace Bruce Chambers as treasurer.

Jeff Patchen will replace Marc Kreuser as Secretary.

Adam Casper will replace Michele McManus as board director.

Holly thanked Past President Linda Werts and announced the line up for the next three years - Donna Johnson, Melissa Correia and Mitch Ruffalo.

LOOKING BACK ON HOLLY'S YEAR

With this year’s motto - ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD - we had to find new ways to connect during a world wide pandemic.  We were the first club in our district to have virtual zooming with 35-45 attendees staying connected.

Holly had 3 main goals:

1.  Participant engagement involved our 5th Thursday bowling events, the Service Above Self dinner that honored Pat Albrecht and hopefully we will have a summer picnic at the home of the Hicks.

2.  Unfortunately, in an effort to engage younger members, a satellite club was unable to form due to the Coronavirus.

3.  We reconnected our own members with 60 second introductions, surveys regarding lunches and Holly’s favorite “talk like a Pirate Day”.  We hope to revive Rotary Bucks and the annual end of year auction.

Other memories include the children’s desk donated to the library and Helmuth’s 50 year membership that we hope to celebrate in person in the future.  Twelve new members were added to the roster, 7 Paul Harris pins were presented, a successful and timely Mask project was coordinated with Hallagan Mfg,  the on going free lunch program and 15 Zoom meetings.  Sadly we remember the loss of our member Marilyn Lawrence.

Things got a little soggy as Holly attempted to thank the board and her family for their support as she lived Rotary 24/7 over her tenure as President. Her family was patient but did have to enforce the ‘NO ROTARY TALK’ at the dinner table!

Finally Holly passed the President’s Medal (a gift from Gary and Norma that they bought in Germany at the International convention in June of 2019) to Donna Johnson.

Donna gave Holly some beautiful Rotary earrings and toasted to a “FUN YEAR”.

Dave Hannan presented Holly with a Paul Harris plus 1 pin.  He was pleased to announce that each member in our district gives $100 and we have 50 sustaining members.  He thanked Holly for her great leadership, telling Donna she has large shoes to fill!
