Opening and Invocation led by Steve Taylor. Wellness Report – Marc said that Hannelora is mostly recovered from Covid but Helmuth is still fighting it. It is hard for them to speak by phone at this time. We welcomed Michele back, now out of the hospital. Guests: Yvegner Sylla of Kay Espwa Orphanage, guest of Doug Announcements: Dave Christler said that the Community Service Committee is looking for members to form a committee to honor veterans during this Rotary year. Dave said that the Community Service Committee currently has 10 members and is looking for new members. International Service Committee: Linda announced that the committee will meet next week to discuss goals for this Rotary year. Linda is seeking a chair or co-chair for the Literacy Committee. During our meeting we were asked to write down what we are currently reading. Dave Hannan announced that the Service Above Self committee will meet to prepare nominations for the Service Above Self award to be given during the annual dinner on October 24th. No conflict with a Bills game this year! Dave talked about the polio vaccination program which took place in Gaza recently.
Kay Espwa Orphanage Update: Doug and Sylla spoke about the orphanage. It started at Sylla’s home and which has been built up to three stories, 15 rooms and 6 adults running it. Sylla thanked everyone for their support. The orphanage has internet which allows them to view programs on a television in the house. The children have a schedule which includes going to school and prayer. They need to bring in water by truck as municipal water is not reliable. The main source of electricity comes from solar panels. They do not always use electricity as a result. Sleeping at night can be difficult when it gets very hot. Bathing is done through the use of buckets due to lack of running water. Feeding everyone is a big job and time intensive. It takes a lot of work to bring in food, operate the stove, etc. There are no leftovers due to lack of refrigeration. Food is becoming more expensive. Queen of Hearts. Dave Johnson did not pick the Queen - the pot continues to grow. Birthdays: Evy, Mary Jo and Chuck Club Anniversaries: Marsha (7) and Jonathan (7) Happy Moments: Doug Forgue was happy to participate in the Camp Onseyawa teardown with other Newark Rotarians. Dave Doelber and his wife spent a nice weekend in Lake Placid. Their tour guide was on the USA bobsled team in the 1972 Olympics in Japan. Frank was happy the Georgia Bulldogs beat the Clemson Tigers. He also announced the winner of the Sharon Marie All scholarship: Ethan Coleman. During the award ceremony Frank told the story of how years ago, Eli, through surgery, saved the life of Frank’s dog Lola, who ate a toy. But Eli wasn’t at the awards ceremony to hear the story and see the presentation! He was fishing! Dave Johnson said two lifelong friends visited him and they had a great time.
