Mayor Jonathan Taylor reported the exciting news that IEC will be staying in Newark at the new location of Silver Hill Technology Park creating 300 new jobs. This year’s Chicken BBQ is scheduled for April 22nd. The Pancake breakfast was a huge success - moneys raised to be announced. Laurel House is sponsoring another 5K walk/run on June 9th. T-shirts are guaranteed for the first 200 pre-registrants. Community Pride Day is on Saturday, May 19th, making our village attractive by planting flowers.
SPEAKERS
MARCH 8TH - KIRK BAKER
Kirk graduated from the University of Rochester and Colgate Divinity School. He is presently going to Syracuse University to het his PHD in higher education. Kirk spoke to us about a mission trip to China he took following college. He was there during the political chaos of 1989 and witnessed the horror of Tiananmen Square. He has recently accepted the pastor’s position at Honeoye Falls Presbyterian church. He will be missed by Newark Rotarians and Presbyterians alike.
MARCH 15TH - BOB STOPPER
Bob is a member of the NYS Canal Photo Pool. He is a member of the Canal NY board of directors and an Erie Canal Ambassador. He is a retired NHS teacher. He encouraged us to take a canal tour and learn and appreciate the history that he narrates as the Canal historian. Everyone received a flyer of the Summer tours planned for this year.
MARCH 22ND - BILL BUSH
Bill has recently retired from the position of President and CEO of Enetics Inc. He now dedicates his time to advancing the worthy cause of “Family Promise” whose mission is to reduce and ultimately eliminate family homelessness in Wayne county. Last year over 600 children and their parents were homeless in our County. Churches in our area have opened their doors to temporarily house these families in need. Our own Linda Werts is the Vice Chair of this project.
MARCH 29TH - MATT COOK AND DAVID CHRISTLER
NHS principal Matt Cook and Chief David Christler discussed the timely issue of School Safety. Newark High School has a great partnership with our Mayor, Jonathan Taylor and our police department. Keeping schools safe, and at the same time welcoming, is a hard balance. COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY - parents and students are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior in their classmates. We are lucky that in our community gun violence is rare.
Lisa Schram became a new member on March 22nd. She was sponsored by her sister Tracy Zornow. Lisa has been a Newark School District bus driver for 25 years. She does hairdressing and owns rental properties in Newark and Lyons. She has hosted 2 of our former exchange students. Jonathan Taylor and Dave Tyler received their blue badges. Linda Werts reported we have 105 members at this point. We are looking at 4 membership applications - that would put our club in 2nd place in our district.
FOUNDATION
Our annual Foundation Brunch will be held this year on Sunday, April 8th at Ventosa Vineyards in Geneva. We are planning to honor Bob Goodman.
CAMP ONSEYAWA
Marge Gile announced that this year’s fundraising Golf Tournament will be held on June 9th at Silver Creek.
YOUTH SERVICES
The Newark Interact students had their shelter box on display at the Pancake breakfast on March 17th and were there to answer any questions. Russ Harris has returned from Omaha where he attended a training session, learning more about foreign exchange programs that he will share with his committee.
ALENA’S UPDATE
Alena enjoyed performing in 4 performances of the NHS musical, “Nice work if you can get it”. Rotarians who attended were very impressed. She will be going to Myrtle Beach with her host family for Spring Break.
