PRESIDENT KEVIN’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Kevin presented Manny and Alice Crespo a check for $250 for the free lunch program.  Bill Doebler has volunteered there for 20 years and everyone loves his p&j sandwiches!  ERP still has trees available for the global tree planting challenge.  “Bed City” was held on May 12 at PPC to benefit homeless families through the Family Promise of Wayne County.   Alicia Vasquez has received her blue badge.  On Saturday May 12th the annual “Shred it” and food donation was held at Howard Hanna.  Visiting PDG Mark Wyse helped Norma in presenting the Paul Harris pin to June Crawford.  Mark also presented our club with a check for $2,500 to complete the simplified grant for the water project in Mexico.  A thank you note was sent to Dave Hannan from Bob Goodman’s family expressing their gratitude for honoring their father with the Polio Plus Pioneer award.  President Kevin presented the $15,000 check to Anne Cook and Pat Albrecht to complete our club goal for Laurel House.  Our progressive dinner will be a little different this year due to lack of enough homes for the main courses.  The appetizers will be extended by time and volume and then we’ll go straight to dessert.

Wellness

Frank All is now waiting for 2 doctors to coordinate their schedules to perform his surgery at the end of July.  Bill Doebler sent a thank you for the flowers he received after his recent surgery.
 

Community service 

Clean up at the community gardens was held on May 20th.  There are 7 plots reserved so far.The mobile pantry commitment is for June, July and August until the new guidelines come out.  We need more parkers and shopper help.  Another chicken BBQ will be held on Father’s day.  On June 2nd at NWCH volunteers are needed to fit bikes to children.

Jessica is the president of the Newark Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber provides networking opportunities at monthly lunches,  business after hours and workshops for business solutions.  The Chamber is a part of the village economical development committee.  Community events include:

1 - Wine and Artison Festival

2 - Music on the Erie

3 - Taste of Wayne Co.

4 - Farmers Market

5 - Welcome Wagon 

May 10th - David Saracino

David is an attorney in Newark, recently joining the firm of Boyle and Code.  David talked to us about Nursing Home planning.  People are healthier and living longer.  /as if 2014 45% of people will ned long term care in the state of NY.  50 billion a year is spent on Medicaid.  Dementia is not covered.  David recommended getting an attorney in Elder law when the time arrives.

May 17th - Newark Interact

Holly presented roses to all student officers leaving the board this year.  A video of Interact activities was shown. Holly has worked hard and enjoyed her time with the students of interact and has promised to help the incoming advisor , Melissa Allison.  Lindsay Whiting will represent the United States in Italy.  She is going to SanMarina where she is excited about the possibility of NO SNOW!  Grace Kreuser will be traveling to Odense, Denmark, the 3rd largest city hosting the 4th largest Rotary Club. All these mature students represent our bright future.

May 24th - George Paulk

George presented a program on the Erie Canal Forest Restoration.  Their mission is to restore the presence of white oak trees in NY state’s canal regions.  Laura Bailey, manager of our new nursery, is on the staff of ERP as an expert in tree growth.  Also on the Staff is Jennifer Turner.  She has a degree from the University of California in Ethics of Environmental Science.  She is available to help our club plant trees.

Special Announcement

Dave Hannan with the help of Scott Healy’s contract negotiation skills has secured the Niagara Falls Hotel for our 2020 district conference April 30-May 3.  Dave will be our District Governor in one year beginning on July 1st.

YOUTH SERVICES

The May 17th meeting was led by our Newark High School Interact club.  We all enjoyed the Snapple fun facts.  The One Act play was performed on May 19th.  “The Nine worst breakups of all time” was directed and performed by the students.  The club decorated a bed for “Bed City” and won the award for most creative.
