Club Announcements

Rise against Hunger

People from the community including many Newark Rotarians gathered at the Episcopal church on the week-end of September 14th assembling thousands of rice packages to send around the world to people in need.

Literacy

September 8th was international literacy day. Kurt Werts proudly reported that our club participates in the dictionary project, literacy volunteers, the annual spelling bee and reading in the elementary schools.

Eastern Cities Dinner

All members were encouraged to get their reservations in for Sunday October 28th at the Rochester Convention Center. Early bird tickets are $55.

RLI

Norma Reilly encouraged members to attend this year’s annual meeting on leadership skills. Our club will send 6 members for free on November 3rd at the Palmyra High School.

Laurel House

Pat Albrecht has collected almost 800 L dollars. Sandy Devolder received 2 tickets to the Gala that were auctioned off for $75.

Yankee Candle

Jean Bendix is chairing this fundraiser with orders due on October 12th.

Mobile Pantry

President Linda thanked the Mobile Pantry workers serving 154 households and 337 individuals.

Queen of Hearts

September 13th - we have a winner! Congratulations Michele!

Service Above Self Dinner

October 18th we will have a Thursday night dinner in place of our Thursday lunch meeting.Dave Hannon reminded us that nominations are due.

District Simplified Grant and check presentation

Our grant this year is for a black-top project at Fireman’s field to improve the distribution at the Foodlink Mobile Pantry. Newark Rotary has committed $7000 to the project for which we will receive a $3500 District Simplified Grant. The check was presented to Rusty Havert, Newark’s Fire chief.

Wellness

We are happy to have Frank All and Marge Gile back to our Rotary lunches. Roger Vandermortel was missed with his help in setting up for our meeting on Sept 20th - expected back next week. Our thoughts are with Jean Williams grandson who is in his 6th week of chemo. Tennis friend of several rotarians,Tom Shear, is in the Syracuse hospital following a fishing accident. Hannelora is recovering at home following cancer surgery. Karen Quartaro’s brother who lives in Florida recently had his right leg amputated.

Community Service

Fred Hicks has volunteered to organize the Highway cleanup for October 13th. The first BBQ of this year was held on Sunday, September 30th.

SPEAKERS

Sept 13 -Sara Shaw - Genesee Country Village and Museum

Sara is the Senior Director of Programs at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. This is the largest Living History Museum in New York State. It is a living, working 19th century village where costumed interpreters bring history to life. There are 68 historic buildings in the village including the blacksmith, potter and print shop. In the John L. Wehle Gallery is the nation’s premier collections of sporting art and 19th century clothing. This year there are 10 Fall and Holiday Special Events.

Sept 20th - Mark Plyter - Wayne County Humane Society

Mark has been involved with animal care and control for 26 years. He has been the Executive Director of the Humane Society of Wayne County for the last 13 years. The Society is involved with adoption and the spay and neutering system. They have 3 off site adoption centers. Mike Muscolino as Director of Alex Eligh Community Center is interested in having Mark present a program for kids and families at the Center. We were privileged to meet Mark’s special guest -”Munson”. This dog was rescued after having been locked in his crate for several years. They are working on his health needs and teaching him how to walk before he will be ready for adoption. Volunteers are always welcome to help at the Humane Society.

Sept 27th - Matt Park - Voice of the Orange

Matt has been the play-by-play voice of the Syracuse Orange for almost 20 years.It’s an exciting year for the football team standing at 4 and 0 so far. Some new updates this year are the Dome renovation, ESPN allowed in the locker room post game celebrations and linear ACC network covering 100 sports events. As an adjunct professor at SU’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, Park directs the Sportscaster U. career development program for professional athletes.

Public Image

Tracy’s committee, now up to 8 members, has offered to do flyers or other means of communicating for any other committee needs. They are in the process of doing a trifold display of Rotary projects.

YOUTH SERVICES

Blue badges were awarded to our exchange students Eliana and Elliot. Both students are enjoying their year so far. They agreed that School can be very confusing to find your way around all the maze of hallways. Elliot is playing soccer and was pleased to get his first goal. Eliana is learning the “new to her” game of volleyball. She enjoyed meeting another exchange student from Italy in Phelps.

President Linda read an interesting and informative letter from Grace Kreuser who is enjoying her time in Denmark. Holly needed a few kleenex! Lindsey Whiting was happy to finally arrive in Italy on Thursday September 27th. Interact is having a fundraiser this fall -”Pennies for Polio”.

FINE PEOPLE

Camp Onseyawa participants. Police, Fire and 1st responders serving 9/11 17 years ago and all who serve today. Rise Against Hunger volunteers filling 8,700 packages. The Chicken BBQ committee raising money for the Mobile Pantry blacktop project.
