Carole Nary passed away on March 18 2021. Carole joined Newark Rotary over nine years ago on January 5, 2021 and was sponsored by Dave Hannan.

Here are some comments from Newark Rotarians about Carole.

Sharon SanAngelo said Carole was a “go getter”. She was full of energy, cheerful and wanted to get things done. Carole shared her recipes with Sharon and they went together to the Progressive Dinners.

Mary Jo Fenyn worked with Carole on the Newark Wayne Community Hospital Auxilliary Scholarships awarded to the nursing staff. They had fun at Rotary and the retired teachers’ luncheons. “She was a lovely person who would do anything for anyone who needed something”.

Dave Hannan commented: “I was not her doctor, but was Bob’s, and got to know her as Bob’s illness progressed and he became terminal. She knew how much Bob was committed to Rotary, and at some point I inquired about her interest in Rotary, and that I would like to be her sponsor when she was ready. It took a while, but she did follow up with me later when she was ready to join. Lara, her only child, lives in PA, and Carole had an extended visit there in the last few months. “

Pat Albrecht wrote:  I will miss Carole Nary.  We chatted about so many things.  She always had such good input, dating back to my first days in ministry in Newark.  That was 2002.  She was Volunteer Coordinator at the hospital. I stopped in her office one week on my hospital rounds and introduced myself. I was the new Pastoral Associate at St. Michael Church.  From then on each week, I stopped to say hello  if even for a
minute.  We became friends easily and quickly.  We shared life's challenges and joys...and oh that laugh, there was no mistaking it. I smile as I write this, remembering it.  I will miss hearing her laugh.

Time passed and in late 2012 the idea of Laurel House was beginning to take shape.  I had been in conversation with the hospital and knew Carole would be a font of information and would help; always she would help. It was Carole who did the first round of visiting other Comfort Care Homes with me; as time unfolded we were joined by others of like mind.  We were the first ones to speak to various groups even before a
committee was formed, about the hopes and plans for Laurel House, probably even before we had it all down on paper.

Until March 18, 2021 Carole was active in various ways at Laurel House, especially in the building and grounds committee.  I like to say she had an eye for beautification...she stopped in one day with 2 wreaths for our doors, simply because they would look nice. Carole had a faith that was deep, strong, powerful and she lived that faith bringing it to all she did; not flaunting it, just bringing it in her presence.

She was a powerful force that will be missed immensely in our community, although I think her presence will continue to be felt in many ways as days continue to unfold. We attended a women's faith sharing group together called Faith Sandwiched In.  There was much laughter and serious conversation as well; it was a joy and  something else that I will hold in my heart and miss sharing with Carole.

I remember walking into a former hospital president's office with Carole and him saying something like he always felt the energy around Laurel House when we met with  him. She was a wonderful gift to all who knew her.  She gave herself to all that she did.
Carole invited me to join Rotary - several times - she didn't give up.  When I said yes she was there with me, to introduce me to those I didn't know. When I said yes too many times, and health issues got in the way, she was there to tell me it was OK to back away a bit. Always, always the cheerleader; always the person who was willing to help with whatever was needed and I will forever remember her as a wonderful faith-filled, kind friend and mentor and most certainly as the wind beneath my wings.  Rest well my friend, rest well.
