Check fraud has escalated. Felony Lane Gang comes into an area — hit it for 24 to 48 hours then leave. They rent certain types and colors cars — then steal the front license plate off of the same type and color car. When arrested a man in CDGA who had turned in over $60,000 himself - 20 people in team.
Email phishing - spoofing - if you are sent an email where you don’t know the sender — delete it. Just delete it.
Romance Scams — they check obits and prey on the lonely.
Identity Theft — occurs when someone uses your hame, address, social security number (SSN) bank or credit card account info.
Ways to get your personal information:
- steal wallets and purses
- steal your mail - including bank statements, credit offers, new checks, etc.
- change of address forms
- ”dumpster diving”
- fraudulently obtain your credit report by posing as a landlord, employer or someone else who may have a legitimate reason for the data.
- website spoofing or phishing software
Best defense with online banking — have a dedicated device that you only do online banking with.
2 factor authentication — have it come back to a hand held electronic device rather than an email.
Closely monitor the expirations dates on your credit cards
Add a FRAUD ALERT on your Credit Report
