Last week we enjoyed listening to our challenges and opportunities over the past year. We also made donations to two organizations.
WELCOME VISITORS
Jean Bendix introduced Nicholas Balch who was a former student. He is an FLCC graduate working in Real Estate in Geneva.
WELLNESS REPORT
Bob Bendix reported that Jean Williams is having a second knee replacement.
Lucina reported that her son-in-law is home from the hospital and will have his appendix out in 6 to 8 weeks.
HAITI UPDATE
Doug Doebler was pleased to accept a check for over $1,000 from the Queen of Hearts fundraiser. A new self sufficient village of 40 houses is being built in Haiti with solar panels, running water and compost toilets. Since the 2010 earthquake our club has donated to the orphanage project.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Donna also had a check for Laurel House. Three “Gala Girls” accepted the check. Michele, Pat and Trudy were representing the committee that is planning the annual Gala to raise money for this worthy cause.
MaryJo Fenyn accepted a check of $500 for the Free Lunch program.Gary Reilly reported that the camp auction cut off is Friday June 11th at 7:00 pm. So far they have raised $2000.
Donna Johnson reminded us that dues need to be in by June 16th. 60% have paid.
Holly Kreuser announced that the last board meeting will be held in-person at the Erie Shore Landing Cafe. Check your email to place your order.
Norma Reilly encouraged us to attend the virtual International convention on June 12th. There will be interesting breakout sessions, entertainment and cooking classes.
Cindy Timerson enjoyed her short Newark Rotary membership. Thursday was her last day before moving to Charlotte North Carolina.
Linda Werts is pleased with the progress of the new project - Pop Up Pantry. We have located an indoor winter site with an open bay. Linda has also found a pig farm to take the organic waste. We will need 5 or 6 more ACTIVE volunteers helping to unpack the pallets. The Pantry will again be held on Wednesdays at 3:00. She may ask Canandaigua to partner with us - they felt it was too much work to do on their own.

OPPORTUNITY CHALLENGE
All of us have been challenged in one way or another during the pandemic. President Donna asked us to share a challenge and the opportunity it presented.
DOUG FORGUE - Six years ago his 2 sons and their mother moved to Oregon. During Covid they were unable to visit. He is making up for lost time, visiting now as often as possible. Another bonus - he has learned to cut his own hair.
LUCINA HALLAGAN has missed seeing her only grandson Henry. Thanks to zoom they have learned how to play virtual games like BLOCKZI. They have a schedule and they stick to it!
MARYJO FENYN had a rough year losing her husband and her brother. She has moved and has a new home and new friends. She makes the decision every day to BE HAPPY
KAREN Q had a marketing job that came to a halt.! She joined ‘telehealth’. She can install equipment and learned that she enjoys going to patients homes and can make them laugh.
MELISSA CORREIA was happy to have more time to be with her father who has leukemia. By spending more time at home they have been able to pay down their mortgage!
LINDA WERTS - There are many homeless families in Wayne County. With churches being closed, the Family Promise program had to come up with a new plan. Four apartments in Savannah have been made available to house 24 people.
RUSS HARRIS - Not being able to go out to dinner, Russ learned to cook(encouraged by his wife). He found that he liked his own cooking and has lost 80 pounds by eating healthy.
DAVE HANNAN and his wife Pam have a combined family of 8 children in 8 states. They have been meeting weekly on zoom - looking forward to “Christmas in July” when they all come home!
ALICIA VASQUEZ found that a virtual story time at the library actually reaches a wider audience.
DONNA JOHNSON has been dealing with the trials of home schooling and work at the bank has doubled. She has always been independent and this year has taught her to ask for help.
HAPPY MOMENTS AND CONFESSIONS
Doug Doebler was happy to travel to Buffalo to see his daughter and visit the Niagara FASHION OUTLET MALL. He was also very pleased to see the major improvements to the American side of the Falls.
Marc Kreuser had a confession concerning a wedding that he and Holly and Melissa attended. In all innocence he changed his steak order to chicken and poor Melissa was unable to have the chicken she had her heart set on.
Norma was happy to take a bus trip to Cape Cod in May, remembering an attempt to go to the Cape 25 years ago when Gary broke his ankle on the tennis court.
Our next meeting is on June 17th where we will learn about Healthy Aging
