Wellness Report: Everyone doing well.

 

 

President Melissa was happy for the First Annual Bowl-a-thon Fundraiser and recognized all the organizers and bowlers. They had seven teams participating and the Newark High School Girls Bowling Team, who are the state champs, won the bowl-a-thon. The event raised over $1,200. Photos of the Event

 

Melissa was delighted with the Habitat for Humanity build of the deck on March 23^rd. Melissa recognized all the workers. Photos of the Build  

 

Dave Johnson - The ARC is recruiting drivers for home meal delivery.

 

Ann Rogers - She is the coordinator for Lincoln School and JJ is organizer for Perkins. They will be taking “goodie bags” to the schools and give to the staff of the schools.

 

Linda Werts - Memorial Blood Drive for Bob Goodman- Linda is looking for volunteer to coordinate our Spring and Fall blood drives. We are also looking for volunteers for the upcoming blood drive, manage the canteen, registration table.

 

Holly Kreuser - Interact is still collecting bottles and cans through the end of March. So far $220 was raised for the water project in Mexico.

 

Norma referred the survey in which Rotarians requested more hands-on activities. The next opportunity is Newark Rotary Salutes. Norma read off the start times for each school. See photos of the event.

 

Adam O - April 23^rd will be the Erie Canal cleanup and Route 88 cleanup. Sign-up sheets are going around.

Scott Healy announced that his first grandson and Chris’ first child, Jamieson, was born.

Lucina Hallagan had a wonderful visit to California and visit with her grandson.

Adam O gave Happy dollars for Habitat Build.

Dave Tyler announced the birth of his granddaughter.

Norma was happy that Mitch Ruffalo attended PETS in Syracuse.

 

Rotarian Bio - Jean Bendix

Jean was born in Medina and grew up in Walworth. She attended Grove City College and then Ithaca College, earning a Bachelor’s in Music, and a Master’s of Music in Vocal Music Education. She taught at Oswego City Schools, 2 years, and Wayne Central, 11 years, before Newark High School, where she taught for 20 years. Now she gives private voice and piano lessons. She is married to Bob, and they have two recently married daughters, Aubrey and Chelsea. She sings in the First United Methodist Church choir. She likes dark chocolate, red wine, word games and card games. And travel, kayaking, projects around the house…

Speaker - Gregory Peck of the Wayne County Action Program

 

Greg is also the public address announcer for Hobart Williams Smith lacrosse games. He is actually named after Gregory Peck as To Kill a Mockingbird was written when he was born. As a child he attended Camp Onseyawa and the Rose Parade in Newark.  He talked about his childhood. He spent time in Virginia (in the beautiful town of Blacksburg) and Connecticut, then moved back to New York.

 

They have 50 foster grandparents covering 5 counties. Anyone 55 or older can volunteer to work with kids. Many foster grandparents may have not worked with kids before. Kids benefit from this, but also it benefits the grandparents who are lonely. His oldest volunteer is age 91. The help in schools, giving one-on-one attention. Examples include helping with greeting kids coming into schools or helping with writing. The program started in 1965 with Lyndon Johnson. The volunteers receive a stipend of $3/hour. They really want to work with kids, be engaged in the community and decrease isolation.

 

We did a word game during his presentation.
