Program
Russ Harris introduced Susan Hasanauer, superintendent of Newark Central School District. She recognized Ed Gnau, Assistant Superintendent for Business. Susan reviewed the current budget. Expenses are increasing mainly in two areas: health care and special needs support. The possible elimination of county sales tax revenue to the district of about $800,000 is a concern. It could cause a tax increase of 5.79% for the district. The proposed tax levy increase is 2.7%. The district is looking at use of reserves, as well as retirements and reduction of certain programs. Also on the ballot will be the proposal for four new buses. Voters will be able to select two new board members. The Newark Public Library budget vote will take place the same day. The voting will take place on May 17th.

Questions:
How is the budget gap funded? State aid is part of the equation.
How has enrollment changed? Enrollment was 2,150 five years ago. Now it is at 1,995 students. Newark is one of few districts in area that has not had a large decrease.
What is the impact of the elimination of the county sales tax on gas June through December? May affect the budget for next year. The impact might be minimal.
