  • Scott Healy
    • Rotary fact: A Rotary meeting is being held every hour and every day of the week.
    • Family festival is on September 9, 2023. Sign-up sheets will start coming out soon. This will be the club’s biggest fundraiser.
    • Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor please see President Adam.
  • Michele McManus - Silent auction is being organized for the festival. Asking for monetary donations to come up with baskets.
  • Jan Hence - Still need help to sell the raffle tickets. Seven more to break even! Also need wine.
  • Steve Hallagan - Programs: Looking for sources for program ideas. Still looking for program chairs for September and October. Just need 3 programs per month.
 
President Adam reminded us that we have a published author in the club. Sharon Sanangelo wrote a book, They Brought Tarnished Secrets (on Amazon) based on the story of Hannelora.
 
Happy Moments
Jean Bendix - Spoke about of Hemlock Hall at Blue Mountain Lake, ADK, which has sustained over $400,000 in water damage. They are still going to support Hemlock Hall by spending a day to help with cleanup.
President Adam - Flannel Underground playing on Saturday at the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track.
 
Queens of Hearts – Jean did not pull the queen of hearts. The pot continues to grow.
Speaker - Steve Hallagan introduced Joanna Meyer of Camp Onseyawa.
 
The Camp is moving to Camp Whitman on Seneca Lake. In 1955, the camp began when a young girl could not attend a camp due to spina bifida. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 8-16. Very wide ranging camp. Campers will now sleep in cabins instead of tents. Camp Whitman is not as spread-out as Hovey.
 
A team has started working on Whitman. Water and power being added. Cabins being moved. Creating permanent pavilions and new shooting support benches. They have a great partnership with Camp Whitman. There will be pool and waterfront activities. Hiking and fishing at a pond. Shooting sports including BB gun, archery, slingshots. Ceramics, Rotary Carnivals.
The staff comes back each year, not for pay, but because they love it. Joanna started at age 19 and now director 25 years later. Joanna’s husband and two children have been on staff.
Living at camp: Sometimes it’s the first-time campers eat as a family due to capacity issues at home. Seconds at meals is a first for some too.

Every camper attends for free. Every Rotary club is represented on the board. Gary and Norma are the representatives for Newark.
 
Golf tournament, annual dinner and large raffle are biggest fundraisers. The camp costs about $135,000 for two weeks. Assessments raise $31,000. Other income is club donations, simplified grants, staff not taking pay.
